My Top 500 Songs Of All Time

To anyone that compiles lists of 100, 200, 500 or even 1000 of your favourite or best songs of all time (god forbid you do ) all I’ve got to say to that is good luck to you.
For years, I’ve always been a big believer of the fact that music is a subjective thing. No matter who you are, how you have been brought up, what circumstances you might have had - everyone has a different taste of music.
I befriended a young lady at University before we went into lockdown and asked her for her thoughts about the best songs of all time. She had some good ones, Elton John most definitely featured, but she also tossed up suggestions such as Britney Spears and Beyonce, as respected as they were musically, they unfortunately failed to make the cut, simply because I don’t listen to them enough.
I asked my father, who is someone who I look up to in terms of musical taste. That became a seven-hour discussion about what songs should and shouldn’t be considered. When I presented my final list of 500, he was a tad disgusted that I left out Alice Cooper. On a level, I agreed, but I hadn’t exactly heard many of his songs, although I will say School’s Out was stiff to miss - had a lot of good memories with that song.
To pick out songs and claim they are the ‘greatest of all time’, is a tough thing to do, because there will be people all over the world who will strongly disagree. I find that there’s nothing wrong with disagreeing to anything, if you’ve got points that will back you up. Otherwise you’re just clowning everyone, yourself included.
Over the past couple of weeks, I had a go at compiling the best 500 songs that I’ve listened to in my life. What I considered for this obviously included whatever claim to fame they had, but most importantly, I went with the songs that have stuck with me from an early age. Songs that I could put on at a click of a button and songs that, I guess, have had some form of influence on my life.
That’s why I have a number of songs by groups such as Green Day, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Offspring. These are just a few rock groups that helped shaped up the kind of taste in music I wanted to have in life. Minority by Green Day, Pretty Fly For A White Guy by the Offspring and Yellow by Coldplay are songs that when I first listened to, were songs that I could seriously jam too and from the time I first listened to - think back early 2000s, possibly late 90s - to now, they still hold up pretty well for me.
Then there are groups like Queen. I loved hearing songs such as Fat-Bottomed Girls, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions from an early age, but as time went by, I got more invested into their songs. A song such as Bohemian Rhapsody is about as iconic as it comes. You can sing along to it no matter where you are. When it’s on, you can almost stop what you’re doing and you can sing along to it. Radio GaGa was another song that I listened to that meant a lot to me later down the track in my life thus far.
The Police are in the same boat as Queen. Roxanne was one of the first songs I can recall listening to, and enjoying. In later years, not only has Roxanne still held up as a thoroughly enjoyable song, but songs such as Every Breath You Take, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and Message In A Bottle among others came into my life and have stood through the test of times.
Over the course of my life, groups and artists from different eras of music have found their way into different times in my life. I know I used to also enjoy listening to the likes of Blink 182, Cold Chisel, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters and R.E.M any time they came on the radio when I was in Primary School years. In recent years, I’ve found myself enjoying Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Clash, Hall and Oates and Electric Light Orchestra on train rides to University.
I won’t lie when I tell you that part of the inspiration was reading the Rolling Stone’s article that listed the 500 greatest songs of all time - a number of them I found that I didn’t either really agree or songs that I hadn’t heard before. Admittedly, I’m not a big Elvis Presley fan and I am not ashamed to tell you I really don’t like Bob Dylan, despite the fact his music was iconic for his time. I couldn’t tell you who Solomon Burke is or tell you what sort of music Smokey Robinson did.
The same way you read my list and might ask me: Why is Avril Lavigne in here? Why do you have Nickelback songs? They suck! Or possibly be like my old man and ask me: Where the Alice Cooper is? You may also ask me: Who are the F-Ups? What kind of song is Over The Counter Culture? Why are one-hit wonders such as Closing Time and Bittersweet Symphony listed so high up?
The short answer is because it’s my list, shut the fuck up. The longer and more sophisticated answer I can give you is that these were songs that I probably did listen to at an early age. Avril and Nickelback certainly fell into this category - their stuff in the early 2000s were memorable to me. Songs such as Closing Time by Semisonic, Lazy Generation by The F-Ups and Over The Counter Culture by The Ordinary Boys are obscure as it gets, but they still meant a great deal to me over the years.
Not happy with that answer, then you can revert to the short answer and then proceed to tell someone who might give a damn.
Those that do know me, will know that I’m not a big fan of the modern music - most of it is pure rubbish, but there are some gems in amongst the rabble. Adele was, and still is to be frank a very talented artist, bursting onto the scene with Someone Like You and Rolling In The Deep. Tame Impala features in this list with The Less I Know The Better. M83’s Midnight City was pretty iconic to me and Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People also features because it’s a mellow track with lyrics that equal to a school shooting - iconic.
I could go on and on why I have songs are where they are and why I left out Artist X and Song Y, but I’ll leave it with you to observe the 500 that made the cut and leave you to your own thoughts and judgements. Just know that these songs made it for a reason. If I could find time to write about every song listed, I would. But you’re going to have to do with your own thoughts.
If you’re here to discover new music - great! I hope you find some beauties in here, because I feel there are some songs here that don’t get discussed as much as others - for one reason or another. If you’re here to look at the list and criticize me for my taste in music, that’s alright too, but just know, that whilst I’ll respect the opinions, I will be sitting on my desk with a bourbon and coke without a care in the world. As I said at the start, music is purely subjective and everyone has their own tastes.
And let’s be honest, there are other things in the world right now that you’d should be annoyed at and whinging about than some schmuck’s top 500 - I only did this just for a bit of fun.
